For the last 22 months I've been working full time for a company called Protectio, an insurance brokerage company. Not exactly a company one might think I'd work for as a 3D designer, a point that came up often during our all hands meetings.
But it was great experience, as I got to be the entire 3D team, I got to handle everything from start to finish, including:
- Designing Original Characters From Scratch
- Modeling Characters
- Create All Materials and Textures
- Build Out Custom Bipedal Rig + Mouth Visemes For Lip-syncing
*Quadpedal Characters Were Purchased Already Rigged I Simply Modified Textures To Match The Style*
- Skinning + Rigging Characters
- Vray Fur Simulations
- Cloth Simulations
- Scene + Character Layouts
- Set Dressing
- Lighting
- Animating + Lip-Syncing
- Multi-layer Rendering
- Compositing
- Creating 27 Unique Character
- Creating 369 Rigged Props
- Rendering 347 Static Images
- Rendering 20 GIFS
- Animating 17 Thirty Second Ads
So, kind of everything... and a lot of it. But had a great time doing it, I got to build out the entire online presence of this company, they were open to my ideas, and feedback, but let me do my own thing as they trusted my style. It was the first time I had been hired by a company because of my pre-existing work, they saw it online, went "yes, do that for us" so it was a very easy and fun transition.
Sadly thought it was still a start up, so like a lot of other companies, you're kind of at the whim of the world, and this time it didn't go our way. But I did want to share a small collection of the designs I did, this is by no means all of them, hardly even scratching the surface, and if you're interested you can see more of them on the company website (https://protectio.life/) and their instagram (https://www.instagram.com/protectiolife/) This isn't an ad by the way, I'm just showing off the stuff I did, and I'm just proud of so much of it!
Further disclosure!
The company did employ Generative AI for some photos, videos, and generating animated GIFs. I, however *and I cannot stress this enough* did not, use any Generative AI tools throughout any stage of the creation of anything I created at this company, and from the beginning had been adamantly against using Generative AI for any production work to be displayed on the website. There is an AI image of me on the website, that was another point of contention that I sadly didn't have much say in, there were plans to convert those photos into the stylized characters similar to the ones seen in this post, but sadly we didn't get a chance to work on that.
Of course, some Generative AI was used without my knowledge, to turn the static images I crated into GIFs. This was the company's decision, and despite my appeals, couldn't change their minds.
Thank you.
