I started this project back in back in December of last year, thinking it would be a fun project that should take my a month or so, it is a minute long video after all and that takes some time to get right, and render... So I was off just a little bit... like 7 months, but I did also have my first child late last year, so between work, and spending time with them, I haven't exactly had a lot of free time!
But let's run through the process. This started off as a single idea, that idea actually can still be seen as the red gameboy image above, that was what this project was meant to be, a one and done, but then I thought that was too boring, or too simple rather, so I tried something else. I recorded myself playing the entirety of the first level, and had actually modeled out the whole level, mapped a version of Mario on it and was planning on having the layout above be a cropped version of the gameplay... Turns out that was maybe too ambitious... I did also want to get the other colours involved, and I definitely wasn't going to do that 4 more times.
So I met somewhere in the middle, a static frame, but with moving elements, easier to make, but more interesting that just a single flat image. Then it was a matter of finding games I played a lot on the gameboy, but that also someone matched colour wise to the gameboy itself, annnnd were more well known titles. I had to take some liberties, like modifying some elements, leveraging things from other games not on the gameboy colour (shh) and tweaking textures to work.
Then just slap on 3 different light rigs, trying to sync up two different cameras, and having to wait a few weeks for this to completely render during non-working or parenting hours theeeennnnnn having that render fail in the end and have to redo it all again, and bam! You have a complete project.
I think I'll stick with static images for the foreseeable future...
but I must say, 7 months later I'm thrilled this project is finally completed
